AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Beef Council (TBC) continued a proud sponsorship of the Tour de Cure to benefit the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The Tour de Cure is a series of cycling events held in 44 states nationwide with a purpose to find a cure and raise awareness for diabetes and diabetes risk factors.
“Any time TBC can give back to the community and educate people about the healthfulness of beef at the same time, it’s a win-win,” Kathleen Pickett, Central Texas BEEF Tour de Cure Team Captain said. “ADA’s Austin and Houston Tour de Cure rides offered the perfect opportunity to showcase the positive benefits of beef and encourage BEEF Team members to give back to their community by raising money to help fund diabetes related research.”
Checkoff-supported cycling events included the Hula Hut Tour de Cure Kick-off Training Ride, Red Rider Rally, BEEF Team Kick-off Ride, Houston Tour de Cure ride, and the two-day Central Texas Tour de Cure ride from Austin to Fredericksburg and return. Additionally, some riders in Austin completed a double century ride which was 200 miles. TBC also sponsored VIP dinners and a Champion’s dinner throughout the year in each market to help tell beef’s healthy story.
“The Texas Beef Checkoff has a great partnership with ADA and is committed to their mission and efforts to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes,” Jennifer Matison, Senior Manager of Consumer Information with TBC said. “We want to share that research shows that eating more protein-rich foods like lean beef throughout the day can maximize optimal health, manage weight, maintain muscle to age vibrantly, optimize performance and help to prevent disease.”
“Over 29.1 million Americans have diabetes, and we want to see that number decline, not grow,” Hawley Poinsett, RD and Senior Manager of Nutrition with TBC said. “Including lean beef as part of a healthy diet can help people get the high-quality protein they need, along with nine other essential nutrients, including zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and niacin.”
The Texas BEEF Teams consisted of 158 members, including 117 in Houston and 41 in Austin. TBC’s BEEF Team raised over $76,000 to support ADA’s mission to help find a cure for diabetes, raise awareness of diabetes risk factors, and help people living with diabetes.
The Texas Beef Council (TBC) conducts the $1 per head national checkoff program for Texas beef producers and is also the contractor for the Beef Promotion Research Council of Texas (BPRCT), which administers the $1 per head Texas state checkoff program. TBC’s mission is to increase beef demand in the state through programs of beef promotion, research and education. TBC also helps fund national and international beef checkoff programs to increase marketing opportunities around the globe. The BPRCT’s mission is to improve Texas producer profitability by strengthening and expanding beef demand.
